Mental Health

We our rely on our mental health in the same way that we rely on our heart, lungs and other major organs to function our bodies.

Sometimes it is easy to forget the importance of our mental health as we work through our daily to-do lists. As much as we may feel good when we accomplish a task (for all but a few moments) that does not necessarily mean at the foundation of our core we are happy or at a place of inner peace.

We tend to be good at masking our unhappiness with long lists, home distractions or heavy workloads and it is only until we are forced to stop, through illness or other life events, that our truth hits us in our stillness and our mental health is exposed.

This current Covid-19 pandemic has caused many people to sit with their thoughts and be still for the first time in a very long time. It has involuntarily made many people come to terms with their self-worth, challenge themselves, reflect on their daily tasks and habits or even question their current position in life. Many have had to face their true selves and that of the people they live with.

The meaning of what was once important has also changed within personal relationships, friendships, lifelong goals and life in general. Irrespective of what our views are about the health crisis currently happening to the world, this stillness has changed the meaning of true happiness for many people.

The worldwide lockdowns have caused the strength and tenacity of our mental health to be tested. Called and clawed upon our empathy, sympathy, and kindness. Given us no choice but to truly live with ourselves, what and who we have and the home we have created. With question after question being raised about the future and its new uncertainty, for many, the lockdowns have given the term ‘free’ a whole new meaning.

Everyone’s core foundation of happiness and inner peace is never expected to be the same and neither is the journey to finding it. However, everyone is given the same number of hours in each day and the individual choice of how to use these hours.

So, as good mental health is unique to everyone, individually we need to make decisions with our time which will lead us on this journey.

Every day your first prioritised task should be an action that promotes what good mental health means to you and for you.  Create actions to treat your mental health in the same way that we know we should drink water daily to benefit our bodies. Make time for your mental health, nourish it, exercise it, and embrace it because it makes up your core beliefs and your outlook on life and ultimately your decisions and actions.

If your struggling to cope with your mental health, which at some point everyone has, please speak to someone. Talking therapies can help you to find ways to manage and work through your problems.

Seek advice from your doctor or from one of the many mental health organisations and charities that are available.  There is also the option to contact the relevant psychologist associations or professional bodies in your country where you can find details of certified counsellors or therapists locally to you.

Alternatively, there are mindfulness exercises available online that can provide you with tools to deal with stress, depression, and anxiety.

No matter what, please never suffer in silence.
